Speaker Bios:

Kavontae Smalls’ passion for storytelling has fueled his media career for more than a decade. Kavontae is an award-winning journalist with experience in traditional and new media for commercial and public media outlets as well as media and public relations experience in the government and non-profit sectors.

Brittany Jones is an Emmy-nominated, award-winning, and seasoned journalist with 14 years of professional experience in news anchoring, reporting, hosting, and communications. Jones was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida. She graduated from the University of Florida in Gainesville with her Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications and Broadcast Journalism.

After 300 “no’s” from industry leaders, she never gave up and Jones’ late soulmate helped seal the deal for her “first yes” to work in a newsroom. She began her career as a political reporter at The Florida Channel in Tallahassee, eventually working at several stations across the Sunshine state to making her way to National news with the former Black News Channel. Jones, an accomplished journalist, boasts an extensive portfolio comprising hundreds of news stories, as well as the experience of hosting and anchoring numerous newscasts and shows. Additionally, Jones has now woven her passion for storytelling into both the realms of literature and journalism, as a new children’s book author of the “Mike The Friendly Firefighter,” children’s book series to honor her late fiance who passed in the line of duty. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, the National Association of Black Journalists, the Vice President of the Mike Freeland Foundation, and a board member of Young Black and Widowed.
